On occasion Bob has been known to disappear. Frantic searches find him checking out his crab pots, hoping for a haul of little beauties. He is also a late blooming gardener and impersonates Farmer Gnomes around the massive Moreton Bay Fig tree which lines the river bank.

Bob proudly models his new old gardening outfit:

"The Tragedy of the Montevideo Maru"

Australia's worst maritime disaster: an event during WW2 when a Japanese unmarked transport ship the "Montevideo Maru" was sunk by the United States submarine "USS Sturgeon".  When the sub's torpedoes slammed into the vessel over 1000 Australian prisoners of war and detainees were killed. The troops and civilians had been captured by Japanese troops when Rabaul was attacked after the Pearl Harbour raid. The prisoners were en-route to Japan to work as forced slave labour.

Their story forms part of the documentary which also relates the incredible rescue of POWS rescued from certain death by sailors of the same United States submarine which was in the wolf pack which had torpedoed their unmarked Japanese transport: "Rykuyu Maru" 4 days earlier. This submarine "USS Pampanito" remains as a floating memorial in San Francisco and sailors from that WW2 patrol recount their experiences.  The documentary contains vivid re-enactment sequences of  real, horrific events.  "The Tragedy of the Montevideo Maru" was directed by David Napier and brilliantly photographed by D.O.P. Tony O'Loughlin.  Bob was a producer and editor.

"The Tragedy of the Montevideo Maru"  has been screened on FOXTEL History Channel.

Extended version DVDs are now available from www.montevideomaru.com

Bob has completed his yearly edit for the 2010 Queensland New Filmmakers Awards - the biggest film event in town - the Ekka pales into oblivion with comparison, and the films submitted by emerging film makers are truly awesome.  The awards night is Aug 6 at the Tivoli and the clip will be posted in THEpostWORKS gallery after the event.
